The above-mentioned position is available in the Infrastructure and Facilities Management (IFM) Department at Robben Island Museum (RIM). The incumbent, who will report to the SHEQ Officer at Robben Island Museum. The role is to ensure that there is a safe working environment for RIM employees, visitors of Robben Island, contractors and other relevant parties.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Ensure ongoing and continual improvement with regards to Occupational Health and Safety;
• Assist in the developing, implementing, and improving the health and safety plans, programs and procedures in Robben Island and all other administrative offices;
• Assist in ensuring compliance with relevant health and safety legislation;
• Identifying OHS-related training needs in the workplace;
• Conducting safety inspections and risk assessments;
• Assist in investigating workplace accidents and incidents;
• Report on health and safety related activities;
• Assist in compliance reviews, risk assessments and other safety assessments;
• Maintain relevant health and safety documentation;
• Assist in the compliance of applicable laws and regulations;
• Prepare and health and safety reports and other applicable reports;
• Provide advice and recommendations to Departments and Units relating to health and safety measures in the workplace;
• Participate in detailed incident investigations and Root Cause Analysis;
• Promote incident prevention for the benefit of employees and visitors;
• Assist in the development and presentation of relevant health and safety and related training;
• Promote health and safety in the workplace;
• Observe OHS regulations, wears all required safety equipment, encourages safe working practices, corrects obvious hazards immediately or reports them to the proper personnel;
• Assist to implement the Integrated Disaster Risk Management Plan recommendations and plans;
• Ability to work with employees and achieve cultural change in the face of potential resistance;
• Maintain positive and proactive relations with managers, supervisors, employees, as well as our customers and regulatory agencies;
• Perform other work-related tasks as required;
• Relieve Paramedics from time to time when going on leave or become ill;
• Must work shifts when standing in for the Paramedics while on leave or ill;
• Render and administer emergency medical care as set out in the professional registration;
• Assist the SHEQ Officer to address and achieve Health and Safety APP and Quarterly performances.
Experience and Technical skills:
• Relevant degree/diploma relating to Occupational Health and Safety/Environmental Health;
• A minimum of 3 years post graduate experience in managing Occupational Health and Safety;
• Registered ILS or higher and must be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa;
• A minimum of 3 years’ experience in the emergency medical field;
• Code 8 or 10 Driver’s license with PrDP;
• Knowledge of OHSA requirements and experience with managing safety programs;
• Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations;
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedures;
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from management, customers and the general public;
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instruction furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form;
• Understanding of risk management;
• Understanding and experience in incident investigation;
• Proficiency in:Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Report Writing, Presentations.
